Resi Wellbeing At Work

The Conveyancing Foundation’s Wellbeing at Work Week is taking place from the 6th-10th October, aiming to champion mental health and wellbeing in the conveyancing sector. LawCare’s Life in the Law Survey 2020/21 highlights the importance of this, finding that 69% of legal professionals had experienced mental ill-health.

Having been recently awarded Best Workplace Wellbeing at the Modern Law Private Client Awards, Myerson understands the importance of creating a culture that supports its people.

In this article, we explore the ways we prioritise mental health and physical vitality, as well as sharing practical tips from our own Residential Property team on how they maintain balance at work.

Wellbeing at Myerson

At Myerson, we know that our people are our most important asset, which is why our People & Culture team created the ‘Bee Well’ campaign to support employee mental and physical health.

This programme includes free seminars on mental health support, podcasts, relaxation techniques and gym classes. All our employees can take advantage of a £30 health and wellbeing contribution, with many staff members using this for gym memberships, sports activities and mental wellness subscriptions.

Employees also have the opportunity to take part in one of our monthly social events, fully funded by the firm.

These range from comedy nights and pottery painting sessions to reformer Pilates taster classes, wine and cheese evenings, offering something for everyone to enjoy outside of work

Our culture is strengthened by our local community involvement, with employees enjoying one Volunteering Day each year to give back to causes that matter to them. Recent activities have included walking dogs for Dogs Trust, attending school careers fairs, and much more.

Residential Property Team – Top Tips

Here, our Residential Property team share their top tips for managing wellbeing at work:

Acacia Spencer, Solicitor Apprentice:

"I utilise the entirety of my lunch break to get some fresh air and go on a walk with my colleagues. A couple of us from the team recently attended the flower arranging social event which was a nice way to finish a day in the office! We’re also currently in the process of selecting a venue for our team Christmas social which gives us something fun to look forward to, and we often have sweet treats to share around the office to brighten our mood on busy days."

Laura Higgins, Associate:

"I use my £30 wellbeing allowance for my gym membership at Nuffield Health and use my Monday evenings to go to my running club, Didsbury Runners. Also, I use my lunch hour to catch up with colleagues and we always have lots of sweet treats for our team!"

Carly Traverse, Senior Associate:

"I celebrate positive news within the team whether it be personal or professional. I try to go for a walk every lunchtime and always ensure the department’s biscuit tin is topped up!

I enjoy reading, and in the Residential Property team we have a book area where we can share books that we’ve read between ourselves. I also try to do something positive or productive in the evening after work, whether that’s going for a walk or doing some DIY."

Olivia Heston-Morris, Associate:

‘My top tip is making sure you have time for yourself with a hobby you actually enjoy. I recently started taking piano lessons again after giving up playing when I was younger, which means I have to put time aside to practice. It’s screen free and rewarding to see the progression!

Also, go for a walk at lunchtime or just get outside if you can. It always makes me feel better!’

Jessica Thwaites, Solicitor:

"One of my top tips for managing wellbeing at work is to make time to step away from my desk/screen. I often try to get outside for a walk during lunch, even if it’s just for 15 minutes.

On weekends, I like to keep the habit up by going on longer walks, often with my mischievous dachshund! For me it is a great way to recharge, refocus and come back feeling refreshed."

Heather Adams, Partner:

"I enjoy training and playing matches with my local hockey club twice a week I like to go to the gym or take my dog for a walk at lunchtime to ensure I take a break when I’m working from home. I have also been volunteering as a Guide Leader at my local unit for over 25 years now!

“Our department is always busy and continuing to grow, but what makes it so special is how we look out for each other. We’re a close-knit team, and taking care of our wellbeing is something we genuinely prioritise alongside providing the best service for our clients. That’s why celebrating the very first edition of this special conveyancing week really resonates with us. I feel very lucky to work for a firm that truly puts its people first.”
