At Myerson, we're proud to celebrate that our CEO, Carl Newton, is marking 30 years at the firm, including 20 years in a leadership role - a rare tenure in the legal sector.

Carl joined Myerson in August 1995 as a Corporate lawyer, having studied law at Lancaster University.

Over three decades, he has played a central role in shaping the firm’s growth, governance, and culture, helping to establish Myerson as one of the UK’s leading independent law firms. He was appointed as CEO in 2005.

Under Carl’s leadership, Myerson has more than doubled in size in the last five years, with turnover rising from £9.5 million in 2020 to £17.5 million in 2024. The firm has consistently ranked amongst the UK’s Top 200 law firms, and is recognised for its high-quality legal services, strong leadership, and people-first culture.

Our firm operates from a single site in Altrincham, Cheshire, and now employs over 160 people across legal and business support teams.

In September 2024, Carl led the firm through one of the most defining moments in its history; its transition to 100% employee ownership. Myerson became the first law firm in Greater Manchester to adopt an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) model.

The move reflected Carl’s long-held commitment to independence, shared success, and culture as a competitive advantage. At a time when the legal market is increasingly shaped by private equity investment, consolidation, and short-term strategy, Carl has consistently championed a people-first model; one that prioritises team collaboration and performance over the individual to deliver long-term, sustainable growth.

Earlier this year, Carl was named in The Lawyer’s Hot 100 list for 2025, in recognition of his leadership, strategic vision, and contribution to the legal profession.

Carl Newton, CEO of Myerson, commented:

“It’s a privilege to mark 30 years at Myerson and to reflect on how far we’ve come. I’m proud of the culture we’ve built; one that puts people, trust and long-term thinking at its heart.

We’ve scaled while staying true to our values, and it’s that culture, combined with the quality of our service, that continues to attract high-calibre lawyers and a broad range of clients, from ambitious start-ups to established national businesses.

You don’t have to be in the city centre to be a truly regional firm. We’ve always done things a little differently at Myerson, from our single-site base in Altrincham and with a colourful culture that sets us apart.”

Carl Newton

Chief Executive Officer

Carl joined the firm in 1995, known then as Neil Myerson & Co and became a Partner in 1999.

As CEO, Carl is responsible for leading the firm’s business strategy, vision, culture, people management and business support functions, providing strategic guidance to all fee earning and non-fee earning departments.

He leads the Board, Partners, Heads of Department and Business Services Managers to advance client and employee engagement, developing high performing managerial and exceptional client service delivery teams.

Demonstrating his strong leadership, Carl focuses on investing in people and democratising various functions throughout the firm, enabling employee participation.  This has positively impacted the culture of the firm, the motivation of its people and thus its performance.

Carl has significantly bolstered the profile and reputation of Myerson within the professional services industry, championing the brand and engendering an entrepreneurial spirit within the firm to create smart, efficient and flexible working practices, which in turn generate a positive working environment.  He successfully introduced the firm’s operating system (EOS, inspired by the book Traction, Gino Wickman) which has enabled Myerson to further improve its collegiate way of working with a focus on providing efficient, transparent leadership and accountability to its clients as a trusted advisor.

Prior to becoming the Firm’s Managing Partner and then CEO, Carl was for many years the Head of the Corporate and Commercial Department at Myerson.  After gaining a first-class honours degree from Lancaster University and first-class honours on the Law Society Finals course, he trained at Addleshaw Goddard in Manchester and joined Myerson as a Corporate/Commercial lawyer in 1995.

In 2025, Carl was recognised in The Lawyer’s Hot 100 list for 2025 for “shaping the landscape of employee ownership,” leading Myerson’s transition to Manchester’s first employee-owned law firm while driving growth and advising businesses on similar transformations.

Carl champions the law industry at Myerson and is a non-executive director of the UK 200 group, mentoring and inspiring other law and accountancy firms from across the UK.  (The UK 200 group is made of independent chartered accountants, and law firms with connections around the world aiming to ‘build a better together’).
