Our past fundraising events and activities here at Myerson.

Myerson Zumbathon

A large group of Myerson staff and their families recently took part in a 2 hour “Zumbathon” to raise monies for our two chosen charities – the Weekend Day Centre for Dementia Care in Stockport and the Counselling and Family Centre in Altrincham. In total, £162 was raised for our two charities.

Vicky Biggs, a Solicitor in our Commercial Litigation Department and Deputy Head of our CSR Committee, organised the event and said: “We are always looking for unique ideas to raise monies for our two charities. We were lucky enough that a former Receptionist at the firm, Amanda Hibbert, is a qualified Zumba instructor and she gave up one of her evenings to teach us some of her Zumba moves. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all of those who took part”.

All Things British Bake Day

On Monday 9th May, our Regent Road office held an ‘All Things British’ themed baking day in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday to raise money for our two chosen charities, St Ann’s Hospice and Trafford Deaf Children’s Society.

As always, staff members displayed their creativity with their patriotic cakes taking over our conference room; from the traditional Victoria Sponge to “Fish, Chips and Gravy” with a twist.

Amanda Hibbert, our receptionist and member of the CSR Committee said “It is always interesting to see how each individual interprets the theme. I am impressed with the amount of bakers within the company and it is great to see the generosity from staff. Everyone thoroughly enjoys the baking days we hold at Myerson throughout the year.”

Myerson’s Litigation Team take on the Sport Relief Swimathon

On Saturday 19 March 2016, Vicky Biggs, a Solicitor in our Commercial Litigation team and Caroline Deathe, a Trainee Solicitor also in our Commercial Litigation team took part in Sport Relief’s Swimathon.

Both Vicky and Caroline successfully completed their swimming challenges. Vicky swam 2.5K in 1 hour with Caroline also completing 2.5K in 45 minutes.

Sport Relief is a biennial charity event organised by Comic Relief and BBC Sport. It brings together the worlds of support and entertainment to raise money for the most vulnerable people in both the UK and overseas. 50% of the money goes towards good causes in the UK with the 50% being spent overseas. In the last 2 years, Sport Relief cash has helped to enable:

• Over 189,000 children to attend school to get an education;
• 16,500 people to get help to improve their mental health;
• Over 734,000 children be given life-saving vaccines; and
• Funding for 23 projects that support people living with dementia.

Vicky said “the Sport Relief Swimathon was a fantastic event to take part in and I was delighted to take part to raise money for such a deserving cause. I am known in the office for my love of swimming, both in the pool and open water, but the Sport Relief Swimathon was the furthest distance I have ever swum.”

Overall, both Vicky and Caroline raised over £600 for Sport Relief.

The Colour Run Event

On Sunday 19 March 2016, St Ann’s Hospice held a Colour Run event in Wythenshawe Park to help raise awareness and funds for the charity. The Colour Run was a 5k course with different colour stations along the way where you ran through a cloud of paint. There was a Zumba warm-up which was a great way to get everyone into the spirit before starting the run. Five members of staff from Myerson took part in the event and have so far raised £165.00. A link to their Just Giving page, which is still accepting donations, is www.justgiving.com/myerson-solicitors.

Amanda Hibbert, our representative for St Ann’s Hospice and a participant in the Colour Run said, “It was a great event to be a part of and all five of us thoroughly enjoyed it. We were astounded at the amount of people there supporting such an incredible organisation. It was a fantastic way to spend the first day of spring and the International Day of Happiness.”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sponsored us and to the St Ann’s representatives who helped organise the event.

Pet Quiz and Valentines Raffle

Myerson has started their 2016 charity fundraising with a bang! In January, we hosted a Pet Quiz where members of staff had to guess whose pet belonged to whom and what that pet was called. It was an extremely fun activity for everybody who took part. As well as raising £84 for our chosen charities, Trafford Deaf Children’s Society and St Ann’s Hospice, we all learnt something new about our colleagues which made it very interesting.

Vicky Biggs, a solicitor in our Commercial Litigation department and designated Quiz Master said: “I had a lot of fun putting together the Pet Quiz and feel that I now know a lot more about my colleagues. The amount raised certainly kick started our 2016 charity fundraising. Further events are planned this year to raise even more for our two charities.”

In February, we hosted a Valentine’s Day Raffle in which staff members bought raffle tickets in order to win a romantic hamper. The hamper included wine, beer, bucks’s fizz, a box of chocolates, a chocolate rose, heart shaped candles, two mugs, bath salts and a ‘How well do you know your partner?’ card game. The response we had was overwhelming with the competitive side of the staff showing through as they bought multiple raffle tickets in the hope of winning the prize. We managed to raise a whopping £124 for our chosen charities with the winner being Joanne Perritt, a Partner in the Commercial Property department.

Amanda Hibbert and Janine Murphy, representatives of our two chosen charities and organisers of this event said: “Organising the hamper was great fun as we tried to make it a prize worth winning. The response we received when the tickets started being sold was more than we could have hoped for and we were extremely pleased with the outcome amount we raised. Despite the competitiveness that runs throughout the office, some were even discussing how to share the hamper with their colleagues if they won which showed how much we all value each other within the Myerson team.”

Bonfire Bake Sale

On Monday 9 November 2015, the staff in our new Grosvenor House offices hosted a Bonfire Night themed baking day. All proceeds went to the firm’s chosen charities, Trafford Deaf Children’s Society and St Ann’s Hospice. The kitchen in our Grosvenor House suite was transformed into a bright and colourful spectacle, full of treats that our staff members worked hard to prepare.

The event was organised by Vicky Biggs, a solicitor in our Commercial Litigation department. Vicky said “With Bonfire Night just a few days before, another themed baking day was the perfect opportunity to raise more money for our chosen charities. Everyone that baked made a huge effort with the Bonfire Night theme and there were some seriously spectacular treats from a rocket designed Victoria Sponge to cupcakes elaborately designed to look like mini-bonfires.”

The event was held throughout the day and was highly successful. Everyone enjoyed tasting the cakes that were made.

Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

On Monday 28th September 2015, our Regent Road Office hosted a baking day and one of our conference rooms was transformed into a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Staff members worked hard over the weekend making Alice in Wonderland themed sweet creations to help raise money for our chosen charities, Trafford Deaf Children’s Society and St Ann’s Hospice.

The tea party was organised by Amanda Hibbert, one of our receptionists and Janine Murphy, a solicitor in our property department. Amanda said “Having a themed baking day was a fun way to raise money for the firm’s chosen charities. It was great to see the effort that the bakers put into their themed cakes and treats and even better to see the generous donations that were received from staff. We even had some first time bakers so it was great to see everyone getting involved.”

The tea party was held throughout the day with clients and neighbours joining us. The day was highly successful and everyone enjoyed tasting the wacky cakes that were made for the event.

Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

Myerson Solicitors were delighted to have taken part in Macmillan’s biggest coffee morning on Friday 26 September 2014.
The coffee morning was organised by Helen Littlewood, a solicitor in our employment department. She said “Having a coffee morning at our offices in Altrincham was a great chance for the team at Myerson to bake something delicious and raise money for a great cause. We were delighted to take part and raise money for Macmillan.”

The world’s biggest coffee morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. Macmillan ask people all over the UK to host their own coffee morning and donations on the day are sent to Macmillan. The first ever coffee morning took plae in 1990. It was so effective that the next year, Macmillan made it a national campaign. Since then, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has raised over £138 million for Macmillan.

Team Myerson take on the Manchester Marathon

Former Manchester United and Manchester City football legend Denis Law lines up alongside local solicitors and meningitis charity staff to receive a cheque for over £11,000 to help fight the disease.

Denis, patron of the UK’s largest meningitis charity Meningitis Now, was joined by the charity’s founder Steve Dayman, North West regional fundraiser Becky Dodd and Richard Lloyd and Vicky Biggs of Altrincham-based solicitors Myerson, who raised the money through a team of runners successfully completing the Greater Manchester Marathon in April. The cheque presentation took place at the offices of Myerson in Regent Road, Altrincham in July 2014.

Myerson chose to raise money for Meningitis Now because the charity provided invaluable support to Richard Lloyd, a Partner in the Commercial Property team, and his family when his niece Isabelle contracted Meningitis B in September 2010.

Isabelle was just 7 when she became gravely ill after contracting Meningitis B. For a time, she was in paediatric intensive care. Over the week that followed there were signs that Isabelle was slowly stabilising, but her family was told that she would have to have her lower arms and legs amputated as they had been so badly damaged by the septicaemia. Isabelle underwent her amputation surgery in October 2010 and has since made an amazing recovery. She went back to school in January 2011. She now has prosthetic blades which she walks and runs everywhere on, and has prosthetic lower arms with which she can now write, paint and enjoy life to the full.

Carl Newton, Managing Partner at Myerson, said: “It was fantastic to see so many members of staff at Myerson take part in the Greater Manchester Marathon. We are really pleased to have raised such a significant amount of money for Meningitis Now and we are sure it will be put to good use”.

Meningitis Now founder Steve Dayman MBE, who launched the UK’s meningitis movement after losing his baby, Spencer, to the disease in 1982, said: “We’re really grateful to Denis for his support and to the Myerson team for taking on this marathon challenge. What an amazing achievement to raise so much money from it.

Without people like them, we couldn’t continue our lifesaving work to fund pioneering preventative research, raise awareness and support survivors and their families. “What happened to Isabelle sadly illustrates how quickly meningitis can strike, and the devastating consequences it can have.”

Meningitis Now exists to save lives and rebuild futures by funding research, raising awareness and providing support to those affected by this terrible disease. It does this without any government funding, relying solely on donations.

Vicky Biggs, a solicitor in Myerson’s commercial litigation department, coordinated the firm’s fundraising efforts. She said “We were really pleased to be a part of the BBC’s Children In Need Campaign and to have raised this amount of money for them. It was great to see the entire team at Myerson get involved and support this well-known charity which has raised such significant amounts of money for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.”

Myerson Solicitor takes on the Great Swim Series

Vicky Biggs, a solicitor in the commercial litigation department and a keen open water swimmer, took on the Great Swim Series in 2013 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The Great Swim Series is a series of open water swims that take place throughout the United Kingdom.

Vicky took on a number of 1 mile swims (the equivalent of around 65 lengths in a 25 meter pool). She took part in the Great North Swim (Lake Windermere), the Great Manchester Swim (Salford Quays), the Great Scottish Swim (Loch Lomond) and the Great London Swim (Milwall Docks). Completing all of the swims in under an hour, Vicky also raised over £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“I had a great time taking part in the Great Swim Series and I was so grateful for all the support I received from my family, friends and work colleagues whether it was sponsoring me or coming along to support me at the various swims. I am really pleased to have raised such a great amount of money for Macmillan Cancer Support and I am sure it has been put to great use. It is a cause very close to my heart as I have seen first hand how cancer affects people’s lives”

Myerson complete the Three Peaks Challenge

On Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July 2016, a team of 58 Myerson staff and their friends and families completed the National 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice and Trafford Deaf Children’s Society.

Over the course of the weekend, the Myerson team conquered Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in what is described as one of the UK’s toughest challenges. Read more here about the challenge we faced and how much money we raised.

Charity Easter Egg Collection

On Friday 18th March, Myerson staff participated in a monthly Dress Down Day with a twist. As we were aware that St Ann’s Hospice and Trafford Deaf Children’s Society were holding Easter Egg Hunts, our staff were given the opportunity to donate an Easter egg instead of paying £2 for dressing down. This turned out to be a fantastic idea as we managed to collect an incredible total of 67 Easter eggs which were distributed evenly between the two charities. Read more here.
