New rules introduced by the Law Society in December 2018 mean that firms must now publish their price and service information on their websites for certain areas of law including residential property, employment tribunal claims, immigration, probate and road traffic offences.

In this new era of transparency, firms are required to publish their professional fees, the basis of those fees, key stages of the process and probable timeframes, the expected disbursements, in addition to the experience and qualifications of those conducting the work. If a firm does not have a website, then price related information must be available on request in alternative formats.

The SRA Transparency Rules, which came into force on 6 December 2018, aim to improve the transparency of costs and services which will enable clients to make informed decisions when choosing a law firm suitable for their needs.  However, the Law Society has urged clients to look beyond the price quoted and base their decisions on balance of other vital considerations, which most importantly includes the quality of the services provided.

The President of the Law Society, Christina Blacklaws, advised that:

“Law Society research shows people’s priorities and decisions change as a legal situation escalates - the experience of their solicitor, and regulatory protections, were valued over cost the more difficult or complex an issue became. And the complexity of a case is not always apparent at the outset so it’s not possible to foresee every contingency on day one”.
