The number of adoptions has surged to a 21-year high with almost 4,000 children finding permanent new homes in the past year.
The number of older children adopted has increased significantly. Altogether, 3,980 children were adopted in the year to March 2013 which was 15% higher than last year and 28% higher than in 2011.
In July this year, a new shorter assessment process for prospective adopters was introduced with the hope of further increasing the number of adoptions.
As the number of people adopting children increases, it is important that employers are aware that employees who adopt children have the right to statutory adoption leave (both ordinary adoption leave and additional adoption leave) and statutory adoption pay. These rights are similar to maternity rights. Employers should ensure that all family-friendly policies are up-to-date to reflect employees’ rights under the adoption legislation.
