He specialises in complex commercial litigation disputes, with particular emphasis on intellectual property.

He regularly advises in connection with dispute resolution matters relating to trademarks, copy right, patents, confidential information, data protection, design rights and reputation management and is regularly instructed by clients from the arts, media and textile and clothing sectors in the UK and internationally.

Jonathan is known for his polite manner and clear, robust and practical advice. He has lectured extensively in law at various levels of qualification and he has a great deal of advocacy experience in the Courts and other tribunals such as the Beth Din.

Jonathan qualified as a Solicitor in 1997 and was a partner in a regional firm in Manchester.

In 2019, Jonathan was appointed as Deputy District Judge.

Jonathan also has a great deal of experience in connection with contractual disputes, including partnership disputes (especially professional partnerships).

Recent notable cases include:

  • Advising and dealing with an American singer/songwriter in connection with a super injunction application;
  • Dealing with a number of cases where defamation and damage to business reputation is alleged through social media;
  • Google Adwords litigation;
  • Assisting a well-known drinks brand in connection with litigation with a Norwegian supplier;
  • Assisting large commercial printers in connection with litigation arising from designs originating in Sweden;
  • Representing 3 Defendants in a litigation involving parties regarding unregistered design rights in bedding and clothing products.
  • Jonathan also advices colleagues in connection with litigation with banks arising out of derivative products (known as hedge funds or interest rate swap litigation).
  • Jonathan is a member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys. He is also the president of Manchester Law Library and a member The Royal British Club.
